Launched in Fall 2002, the After-School Music Program specializes in string instruction for children and adults at all skill levels. The After-School Music Program provides access to music instruction beyond school hours and provides opportunities for Individual Instruction, an essential element for the development of musical skills. Additionally, the After-School Program is open to adults and pre-schoolers. Currently, nearly 50% of participating students in the AfterSchool Program come from outside the In-school Program and reflect the general demographics of East Harlem: 55% African American, 41% Hispanic and 4% White or Asian. Sixty-six percent of our students are from families whose annual income is $30,000 or less.
Individual Lessons and Group Classes in classically-based violin, viola, cello, piano and guitar meet each week. In addition, supplementary classes in specialized topics are featured each semester and include note reading, music theory, improvisational jazz violin for intermediate students and alternative cultural styles for advanced students.
